The European Commission, headquartered in Brussels in the iconic Berlaymont, is one of the main pillars of the European Union. As a central institution within the “European institutional triangle,” it embodies the EU’s executive power and has played a key role in European integration since its creation in 1958. European Commission BerlaymontEuropean Union

An executive body at the heart of the European Union

Composed of 27 commissioners – one from each Member State – the European Commission acts independently to defend the general interest of the Union. It proposes legislative acts, ensures their application, and manages the EU budget as well as numerous community programs. Community programs

Its right of legislative initiative allows it to submit draft laws to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, which generally cannot adopt new legislation without its proposal. Européan Parliament  Council of the European Union

Guardian of the treaties and defender of the common interest

The Commission ensures the proper application of European policies and compliance with the founding treaties. If a Member State fails to meet its obligations, it may bring the case before the Court of Justice of the European Union. It also plays a key role in competition control and in negotiating international agreements.

An institution looking to the future

Brussels, home to the Commission, is the nerve center where Europe’s major directions are shaped – whether in sustainable development, digital transformation, or international cooperation. The Commission constantly adapts to new challenges, whether economic, social, or technological.
